An educational programme designed to encourage the take-up of alternative energy services by the public was unveiled in Dublin this morning.

Climate Change Now is an international communications programme aimed at encouraging the public to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by switching to renewable energy sources.

The campaign is aiming for major global CO 2reductions and hopes to convert a million European households to renewable energy by September next year.

Today's event at the Mansion House is part of a European tour of 16 capitals and is taking place over 20 days.

A Honda Civic Hybrid car used by the campaign will reduce CO 2emissions for the tour by almost one ton and drop fuel consumption by 300 litres.

The campaign is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme and supported by the European Environment Agency, and it is part of former US president Bill Clinton's Global Initiative and the EU's Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign.
