A teenager, who was charged for the 108th time this week, has been remanded in custody following strong garda objections to bail because he had skipped court 30 times and had broken his probation bond.
Judge Geoffrey Browne heard at the Dublin Children's Court yesterday the youth was arrested drunk during curfew hours after he had been ordered to stay at home every night and remain sober.
Fitzgibbon Street Garda Greg Fleming, told the court that he arrested the teenager at 2.30 a.m. yesterday for being drunk and disorderly on Dorset Street.
The 17-year-old who has 75 previous convictions had been released on his third one-year probation bond in December for repeatedly breaking the law after he was let out on a suspended sentence.
He had committed 19 offences for being drunk and disorderly in public, theft, unlawful carriage in a stolen car, fighting on the streets and possession of a wheel brace for use in a burglary, the court heard. These crimes had taken place after he was freed on an suspended sentence in July - on his 56th conviction.
When he entered into the probation bond, Judge Browne had warned him that should he break any of its conditions he would end up in custody.
The bond stated he would have to attend drug abuse counselling, live with his family, obey an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew, stay sober and not commit further crimes.
Garda Fleming, told the court yesterday that he charged the youth under section four and six of the public order act for being intoxicated to such an extent that he was a danger to himself and others and for engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour.
Objecting to bail, he said that previously 30 bench warrants had been issued for the boy's arrest because he had skipped court.
In view of the garda's evidence and for being in breach of the probation bond Judge Browne remanded the youth to Saint Patrick's Institution for one week.
