Brussels - There is no evidence that exposure to radiation from depleted uranium can harm human health, according to an experts' report submitted yesterday to the European Commission, writes Denis Staunton. The report, which was commissioned in January, backs NATO's claim that weapons containing depleted uranium are not responsible for cases of leukaemia among soldiers who served in the Balkans.

"The experts have concluded that radiological exposure to depleted uranium could not result in a detectable effect on human health," the Commission said in a statement.

The EU Environment Commissioner, Ms Margot Wallstrom, said she would take the report into account when she examined the need for more action to protect health and the environment in the Balkans.
