England defender Sol Campbell has ended talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a new contract and is set to leave the club on a free transfer, say reports in British newspapers.

They said the 26-year-old turned down an offer worth £80,000 sterling a week to stay at White Hart Lane and has told friends he will be not be staying with the Premier League club.

Spurs director of football David Pleat has asked Campbell to sign a one-year contract extension to help new manager Glenn Hoddle in his first full season in charge.

"I hope Sol does the same thing Hoddle did for me when I was manager here in 1986-87," Pleat was quoted as saying in today's Sun.

"I pleaded with Glenn to give me an extra year because, as a young manager coming into the club, I knew how difficult it would be for me to lose my star player. He did and he was superb. I hope that happens with Sol."

Campbell is free to open talks with other clubs and would be able to leave Spurs for nothing under the Bosman Ruling.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are reported to be interested if he wants to move abroad, while Premier League clubs Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea could also try to sign him.

Campbell, who joined Spurs as a schoolboy, has played more than 250 games for the club and 40 England internationals.
