Taipei - Rescue teams dug well into the night yesterday seeking survivors among more than 300 people still buried under rubble three days after Taiwan's strongest earthquake on record.
The death toll rose to 2,109 but officials revised down sharply those listed as buried under debris to 306, as more people were accounted for. Some 7,848 people were injured, and 58 people missing.
International teams from the United States, Japan, Russia, Turkey and Singapore helped in the slow, painstaking search but time was the main enemy. However, Taiwan politely rebuffed China's offer to send medical teams, saying they were not needed for now.
