RESTRICTED APPLICATION programmes have either a portfolio assessment or interview component.
All of this is labour-intensive and time-consuming for the staff of the colleges involved. Therefore colleges consider only applicants who indicate their interest by the initial February 1st deadline.
The major addition to the restricted programmes in 2009 is the inclusion of all the medical degree programmes, following the introduction of the HPAT assessment process, which will take place on February 14th next, the details of which I will deal with tomorrow.
Art and Design.
(a) The National College of Art and Design (NCAD)
The NCAD design faculty offers honours bachelor degrees with specialisations in ceramics, glass and metals, fashion design, textile design and visual communication; its fine art faculty offers programmes in fine print, media, painting and sculpture and its education faculty offers a BA (Hons) in art and design education. There is no interview. NCAD also offers industrial design – AD012 – for those interested in the design of products for manufacture. Applicants are called for an interview with concurrent portfolio assessment, which will take place during the week beginning April 20th.
For those who want to teach art, students may qualify by completing the BA (Hons) in art and design education or by first completing another level 8 degree in art and design, then taking the postgraduate diploma in art and design education at NCAD or the diploma for art and design teachers offered by some institutes of technology.
