Retail sales increase 4.5 per cent in August

The volume of retail sales increased by 4

The volume of retail sales increased by 4.5 per cent in August 2004 compared to August last year according to figures published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) today.

The value of retail sales increased by 6.0 per cent august 2004 compared to August 2003 and increased by 4.8 per cent in the month.

More detailed final figures for July were also released.

In the three month period from May 2004 to July 2004, compared with the three months ending April 2004, the largest increase in the volume of sales was in the Hardware, Paints and Glass sector, up 4.7 per cent.

The largest decrease in the volume of sales for the same period was in the Bar sector, down 3.2 per cent.
