AN amateur motorcycle racing rider from Northern Ireland died yesterday morning after falling from his machine during a race at Mondello Park, Naas, Co Kildare.

Mr Trevor Bailey, from Ballynahinch, Co Down, died after he appeared to lose control of his 600 cc Honda motorcycle and collided with a bank of tyres on the edge of the race track during the first race of the day at midday. The race was abandoned but racing resumed later.

It was the first competitive racing death since such events started at Mondello Park in 1968.

A 19 year old motorcyclist died in a traffic accident yesterday on the main Tralee Killarney road. He was Thomas McSweeney, from Kilcummin, Killarney, Co Kerry, whose motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car.
