EMPLOYERS will have to display a summary of the new employment act on the wall so that young people will be aware of their rights, the Minister for Lab our Affairs, Ms Eithne Fitzgerald, said yesterday.

Ms Fitzgerald was speaking in the Seanad at the committee stage of the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Bill, 1996. A full information campaign would be launched to inform young people of the contents of the act, the Minister said. It would not be a once off but a systematic programme involving schools.

Mr Joe O'Toole (Ind) said he welcomed the Bill as a "progressive and forward thinking piece of legislation".

But he said information campaigns only last as long as they are conducted. He called for an abstract of the Bill to be given to every young person in employment to ensure they are fully aware of their entitlements.
