The European Commission has agreed to investigate obnoxious smells emanating from the new Dublin sewage treatment plant, in Ringsend.
The Commission said it has recently "registered" a complaint by the Green Party TD, Mr John Gormley, and will now consider whether to proceed with infringement proceedings against the Government.
However, Dublin City Council said it is hopeful that the bad smells are now a thing of the past following the installation of new equipment at the €300 million treatment works.
Making his complaint, Mr Gormley, the Green Party chair- man and Ringsend resident, said the smell over the weekend and the last number of days "has been terrible and is adversely affecting the quality of life of people not only in Ringsend, Irishtown and Sandymount, but also beyond".
In response, Dublin City Council said it has installed additional odour-control equipment at the sewage plant.
