Riot gear worn by court escort

Prison officers in riot gear escorted an inmate from Portlaoise Prison yesterday for the hearing of a larceny case in Dublin

Prison officers in riot gear escorted an inmate from Portlaoise Prison yesterday for the hearing of a larceny case in Dublin. Warren Dumbrell, Emmet Road, Inchicore, was led into the dock at Dublin District Court handcuffed to prison officers.

Defence solicitor Ms Yvonne Bambury objected to the double handcuffs being used on her client, who was also escorted into court by additional prison officers. But Garda Kieran Smith told the court the defendant had previously attacked prison officers on escorts from Portlaoise. Judge John O'Neill agreed to the security arrangements.

The court heard Dumbrell was arrested in the Rathmines area on October 26th last year under the Larceny Act when he was found in possession of a screwdriver.

Judge O'Neill imposed a three month prison sentence. A charge of failing to appear in court was taken into account.
