At least three bombs have exploded in public buses in the main city of India's Gujarat state, where almost a thousand people have been killed in some of the country's worst Hindu-Muslim violence.

Police said at least three people were injured in the blasts in the commercial hub of Ahmedabad just after the morning rush hour. Television reports said about a dozen were injured.

"It appears that the bombs...are crudely made bombs and intended to create a panic," a police officer said.

There was no immediate indication of who was behind the attacks. Security forces in the state have been on high alert for possible strikes by Muslim militants after the recent violence.
