A 38-year-old motorcyclist taking part in a Waterford fundraising event was one of three people killed on roads in the Republic at the weekend, after his motorbike collided with another at approximately noon on Saturday.
Justin Golden (38), an Athlone businessman who ran a successful landscaping business in the midlands, was killed when two motorbikes collided at Windgap, Dungarvan, Co Waterford.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Waterford Regional Hospital.
Gardaí at Dungarvan are investigating.
Mr Golden was a member of the Midlands Motorcycle Club Fun Run, which has raised over €350,000 for St Luke's hospital in recent years.
Bikers from all over Ireland take part in the fun run and Mr Golden was a regular participant. He is believed to have been escorting the fun run when the accident occurred.
He was a well-known and respected figure in the Athlone area and large crowds are expected at his funeral in the coming days.
"Everyone is very upset. Justin was a very popular member of the group, and like everyone else, he gave of his time freely to raise funds for the hospital," a colleague said.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Castlebar, Co Mayo, are investigating another fatality that occurred at Moat, Balla, Co Mayo, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
