The National Safety Council is reminding all road users to exercise extreme caution in hazardous driving conditions.
"It's a temporary high-risk situation for road users while this period of bad weather lasts," said the council's chief executive, Mr Pat Costello. "So drivers, motorcyclists, pedalcyclists and pedestrians need to be on guard to the added dangers posed by wet and flooded roads."
He advised motorists to check if a journey was necessary and to tune into the latest traffic reports. "Slow down and drive with caution . . . Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Don't tail-gate. Spray from vehicles in wet weather, especially heavy-goods vehicles, can reduce your visibility."
