Treacherous road conditions throughout Kerry yesterday were set to continue today as clear skies led to severe frost last night.

Roads were particularly bad around Kenmare, Dingle, Killarney, Cahirciveen and Castleisland.

The Connor Pass remained closed, and few people were travelling over the Moll's Gap area between Killarney and Kenmare/Sneem.

The Killarney-Mallow road was described as in atrocious condition in certain areas.

Even along the coast in the Iveragh peninsula at Glenbeigh Mountain Stage, Kells and on to Cahirciveen, conditions were very dangerous, as were the Kenmare-west Cork roads.

A number of minor accidents were reported to gardai, who were advising motorists to stay at home.

Bus services from Tralee were cancelled yesterday, but flights in and out of Kerry continued. Train services ran normally.

Valentia weather station yesterday reported some of the lowest daytime temperatures yet in this cold-weather spell. Temperatures plummeted 4 degrees between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday to minus 6 on the ground and minus 1 in the air, and were set to continue decreasing.

However, most people expected in Co Kerry for the sixth annual Go Ireland's New Year Walking Festival, which begins today in Killorglin, arrived last night, despite the weather.

About 50 will today climb Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain, which is covered in glistening snow. A further 25 will take the Gap of Dunloe route, according to a spokeswoman for the walking festival, Ms Kay Woods.

A large group made it to Kerry from Northern Ireland despite the weather, Ms Woods said.
