Police said the “viable” home-made device had been found on the Drones Road outside Armoy yesterday morning and was defused after an operation which ran for several hours.

It was the only viable device found after a number of security alerts, including one on the Ormeau Bridge in south Belfast, during the day.

A high-level security operation continued throughout the day against any dissident republican effort to mark the arrival of the new PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott.
