Robbers in Germany tried to steal fresh euros by tearing out a cash machine but drove off with an account statement dispenser by mistake, police said today.

In one of the most hapless attempts yet to steal the new single currency, three men used a stolen van to pull out the window of a bank branch in Friedersdorf near Berlin on Tuesday night.

But police called to the scene found the cash machine containing euro notes intact, with a separate account statement dispenser missing.

Greece was hit by its first euro heist yesterday when a gunman held up a bank in an Athens suburb and walked away with €100,000.
