Paris - Mr Jean-Paul Guerlain (right), one of France's top perfumers, was recovering after being shot in the thigh by a gang of hooded robbers who attacked the family estate in a three-hour raid early yesterday.

The 170-year-old perfume-making family firm said Mr Guerlain "is well" after undergoing surgery to remove the bullet, but that a security guard shot in the chest by the robbers was in critical condition.

Millions of francs worth of jewellery and silverware were stolen from

the Guerlain estate in the village of Mesnuls near Paris overnight in a three-hour robbery by around 10 hooded gunmen. The men burst into the home of Mr Guerlain (61) in the Yvelines region at around midnight, surprising the guard at the entrance who was held by two of the gang while the remainder stormed the main house.
