Robson gets his man as Woodgate signs

Newcastle have completed the signing of Leeds defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Newcastle have completed the signing of Leeds defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "He's a great young player and another player we have signed for the future - so we are delighted."

The Middlesbrough-born player was hoping to make his debut in the north east derby at The Riverside tomorrow.

But the postponement of the match means his first game in a black and white shirt is expected to be next Sunday's home match with champions Arsenal.

Woodgate has become a regular in the England squad after returning to the fold last autumn and is challenging Sol Campbell for a regular place alongside Rio Ferdinand.

His international career had been interrupted by his involvement in a long-running trial over his role in the savage beating of an Asian student in Leeds city centre.

Woodgate was convicted of affray in December 2001 and sentenced to 100 hours community service. One of his close friends received a six-year prison term for causing grevious bodily harm to the victim, Sarfraz Najeib.

Woodgate will take Robson's spending since the end of last season to well over £20m, following the arrival of teenage midfielder Hugo Viana and former Ipswich defender Titus Bramble.
