European Affairs Minister Dick Roche will attend a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers tomorrow at which Gaza and the middle east will be top of the agenda.
The monthly gathering in Brussels is the first to be held under the Belgian presidency of the EU Council.
Ministers will hear from chief EU diplomat Catherine Ashton on her recent visit to Gaza and discuss the current US-led proximity talks and way forward.
Other items on the agenda include Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the recent UN sanctions resolution and the opening of accession negotiations with Iceland, due to begin on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said Ireland supported the talks.
“Ireland supports the opening of accession negotiations with Iceland, in view of our political, historical and cultural ties with Iceland and the very positive opinion provided by the Commission in February.”
