Tennis:  Andy Roddick pleased watching coach Jimmy Connors with a comfortable straight sets win over Florent Serra in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The number nine seed was in control throughout and raced to a two set lead as Serra had no answer to his opponent's power.

2003 champion Roddick, 24 on Wednesday, looked agitated when his serve was broken when serving for the match at 5-2 in the third.

Yet he soon re-focused to close out the third set for a 6-2 6-1 6-3 victory.

Mikhail Youzhny of Russia upset number 19 seed Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia with a stunning straight sets victory on court six.

Youzhny, whose best effort at the US Open was his round three appearance last year, registered a 7-5 6-1 6-3 victory over the 2005 Australian Open quarter-finalist.

In the women's draw, number two seed Justine Henin-Hardenne eased through her first round match against Maria Elena Camerin 6-2 6-1

Rain delayed play for over an hour at the start of the season's final grand slam, but Henin-Hardenne wasted no time in disposing of her Italian opponent.

The 2003 winner cruised through the first set 6-2, before Camerin received treatment for injury midway through the second set.

Camerin, who has reached the second round here each of the last three years, had to leave the arena and it was thought she might not have been able to continue.

She did return to the Arthur Ashe court to see out the match, but couldn't prevent Henin-Hardenne from registering an easy straight sets victory.
