Tennis: Third seed Andy Roddick admitted he did not know where to look for the missing edge to his ailing game after a shock third round defeat by British youngster Andy Murray at Wimbledon yesterday.
"I don't know, probably under my dresser," the 23-year-old American said after his 7-6 6-4 6-4 defeat on Centre Court, his worst showing at Wimbledon since 2002.
"You know, there's just that intangible quality right now, that edge that's not there. That's what I'm searching for. I've just got to try to have some faith."
Roddick, runner-up for the last two years here and semi-finalist in 2003, praised Murray, although he had a dig at the Wimbledon grasscourts.
"It's tough because three hard forehands to three corners in a row used to work, now it sits up and you get passed from six feet behind the baseline," said Roddick, who has yet to win a title this year.
Roddick said he played better than when he lost to Murray in San Jose earlier this year, although he said his volleying had let him down at crucial moments.
"I volleyed terribly, which is disappointing because I've been doing it real well," he said. "It's just really frustrating. That probably lost me the first set alone."
Former world number one Roddick will now go home and prepare for the US hardcourt season, hoping his fortunes will take a turn for the better.
"It's not like me to lie down. I'll just keep on trying to truck along. That's what I've been trying to do this year. Hopefully something good is going to happen sometime." Reuters
