Romania mine explosion leaves 14 dead

Fourteen miners were killed overnight in an explosion in a coal mine at Vulcan in southwest Romania, Romanian radio reported today.

Two other miners were seriously injured and taken to hospital in the western city of Timisoara. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, the report said.

So far, only the bodies of three miners had been recovered.

Some 40 miners refused to head down into the pits today, fearing another explosion, radio reports said.
