A Romanian family which was last year issued with a deportation order has been granted leave to remain in the State by the Minister for Justice.

Aurel and Sylvia Costinas and their sons, Marius and Ionus, who have been living in Dublin for more than five years, received notification yesterday that their stay has been formally regularised under the Aliens Act. As a consequence they will now be able to take up employment.

The Minister decided to legalise their residency on humane grounds, a Department of Justice spokesman said last night. The regularisation order will be subject to review after 12 months.

The Costinas only avoided being sent back to Romania after the High Court granted leave to appeal the deportation order issued against them last November. An application and appeal for asylum had earlier been turned down by the Department.
