Two men were killed and 17 people injured, one seriously, when a minibus collided with a car in Co Roscommon earlier today.
The crash followed yesterday's two-car collision in Co Laois in which four people lost their lives and brings the death toll on Irish roads this weekend to eight.
Three men, all aged in their mid 20s, were travelling in the car when it collided with the minibus on the main N6 at Ballydangan, Athlone, at around 1.30am.
Two passengers died while the driver of the car was taken to Portiuncla Hospital in Ballinasloe where he remains in a serious condition.
"The driver and five passengers from the minibus were all taken to Roscommon Hospital and have since been released," said a Garda spokesman.
"Ten other passengers from the minibus were taken to Portiuncula Hospital. It is understood that eight of them have since been released, one remains in Portiuncula, and one has been transferred to University College Hospital in Galway."
Elsewhere another man died when his car burst into flames after hitting a tree in Co Cork. The crash at Manche, Ballineen at 9.30pm last night. The driver is believed to have been the sole occupant of the car at the time of the collision.
"The car burst into flames following impact," continued the garda spokesman. "The body was removed from the scene and taken to Cork University Hospital. "The road is currently closed and diversions are in place."
Investigations are also continuing in to a two-car collision which claimed the lives of three men and a woman in Co Laois yesterday.
Gardai today named the victims as Italian Marika Rossi (24) with an adddress in Drumcondra Dublin, Polish man David Dziemianowicz (21) also with an address in Drumcondra, Dublin, William Quane (34)from Monaskeha, Clonlara, Co Clare and Sean O'Donoghue (37) from Lisaleen, Patrickswell, Co Limerick.
Mr Quane and Mr O'Donoghue were travelling to the Irish rugby clash in Dublin.
The crash occurred at Ballaghmore Lower in Borris-In-Ossory, on the N7 Limerick to Dublin road at 9.30am yesterday.
The Road Safety Authority has warned all road users to take extra care over the weekend.
Police in Northern Ireland have also named the man who died in a two-car collision in Co Antrim as 21-year-old Brian Joseph Hazzard, from Ballynahinch, Co Down.
