FAI Cup round-up:Shamrock Rovers brushed aside the challenge of Wexford Youths to book their place in the fourth round of the FAI Cup after a 5-1 win.
Dessie Baker opened the scoring on three minutes but Wexford were level on 13 minutes thanks to a superb lob by Gary Sheahan.
Rovers were back in front on the half hour when Gary Twigg met Danny Murphy’s ball from the left and headed past Holden from just outside the six-yard box.
Rovers increased their lead on 50 minutes when James Chambers pounced and Chris Turner put the outcome beyond doubt with number four on 70 minutes. Chambers completed the scoring 20 minutes from time.
Dundalk’s lack of discipline cost them dearly as St Pat’s dumped a spirited eight-man Dundalk team out with a last gasp 1-0 win.
Two moments of madness on the stroke of half time saw the Lilywhites reduced to nine men –Ciaran McGuigan and JJ Melligan – before Garry Breen saw red late on.
Dundalk appeared to be hanging on for a dramatic result and a replay looked certain but Cash headed home a minute from time to break the home side’s resistance.
Elsewhere, Galway United were 5-0 winners as a cool and clinical display ensured Malahide United were ruthlessly dismissed.
A blistering start from Galway laced with three goals in the opening 22 minutes burned the visitors, before Karl Sheppard and Cian McBrien completed the rout in the second half.
Cork City and Bluebell United will have to meet again after they finished all square at Turner’s Cross.
Cork took the lead in the 34th minute through Graham Cummins but the visitors were back on level terms two minutes before the interval when Darren Meade took advantage of poor defending to net the equaliser.
