Joe Royle will stay on as Manchester City manager despite the club’s relegation from the Premiership.

City return to the Nationwide League next season following last night's 2-1 defeat at Ipswich but club chairman David Bernstein assured Royle this morning his job is safe.

When asked about what changes needed to be made at the club after City's stay in the top flight lasted just one season Bernstein said: "Not the manager's position."

"Joe has done a very good job for us over the previous two years and the last thing we need is unnecessary change.

"But there has to be understanding within the club, between the manager and the board as to what we need to learn and that is very important or there is no point in these exercises."

Bernstein admitted City had been taken by surprise by the quality of the Premiership on their return after an absence of four years.

"There certainly was a culture shock. I have to say we knew there was a gap but I think the gap is possibly bigger than we anticipated.

"It is a very high standard in the premier league and it does take attuning to and clearly we didn't do it well enough." PA
