RUC hopes water cannon will quench unrest

The RUC says two Belgian water cannon will broaden its options in dealing with unrest

The RUC says two Belgian water cannon will broaden its options in dealing with unrest. In a trial run at Aldergrove, Co Antrim, yesterday, officers in riot gear demonstrated how the new cannon could be used in a riot.

This weekend, the cannon will be on standby in Belfast, where there is a contentious parade on the Springfield Road on Saturday, and they will then be moved to Portadown in preparation for the Drumcree march.

At the display, RUC Insp Jimmy O'Brien said that in some circumstances the water cannon would present officers with an alternative to using plastic bullets.
