The DUP leader, the Rev Ian Paisley, said yesterday he is to arrange a meeting this week between the RUC Chief Constable, Mr Ronnie Flanagan, and the Dunloy Orange Lodge to address the controversy over Orange marches in the Co Antrim village.
Dr Paisley, who was granted an urgent meeting with Mr Flanagan yesterday to discuss the RUC decision to halt an Orange march through Dunloy, on Sunday, claimed that an RUC undertaking given to the Orangemen had been broken.
He said that the matter could have "very serious repercussions." Mr Flanagan had asked him to convene a meeting with the local Orange lodge in an attempt to resolve the issue.
There were minor scuffles when police tried to move about 100 local protesters who blocked the road to the village against the proposed march from the Orange Hall to a local Presbyterian church. The RUC said the parade could not be allowed because of the threat to public order.
