Portuguese playmaker Rui Costa ended a three-year goal drought as AC Milan thrashed bottom-placed Ancona 5-0 to close in on Serie A leaders AS Roma.

Milan's win lifted them to second place on 42 points, one behind Roma, who drew 1-1 with Udinese at the Olympic Stadium, after a late equaliser by visiting midfielder Marek Jankulovski cancelled out Christian Panucci's early strike.

Reigning champions Juventus, currently third on 39 points, play Empoli in a match tonight.

Fourth-placed Inter Milan's poor form continued as they stuttered to a 1-1 draw against unfancied Modena. Elsewhere, Lazio recorded their first win in four matches, beating Lecce 1-0, while Chievo Verona beat Brescia 3-1.
