THERE WAS chaos yesterday when a runaway bus careered through a small Co Donegal town and ploughed into cars.

Witnesses watched in shock as the North West Busways bus rolled down the middle of Moville shortly before 8.30am. It caused thousands of euro in damage to six cars, including a new €32,000 car specially adapted for a wheelchair user.

Most of the cars were parked at the time, but one female creche worker suffered minor injuries as the bus hit the driver side of her vehicle.

There were no passengers on board the bus – the 8.05am to Derry. They were asked to disembark after the driver had problems with the handbrake.

It is understood the driver then went into a shop before the empty bus rolled down the street. It travelled downhill for about 500 yards before becoming embedded in a white Alfa Romeo hatchback. It in turn was pushed into the front of a car parked behind.

Bus company owner Joe McGonagle said he was trying to piece together what happened.

“My understanding is that the driver applied the handbrake and let the passengers on. When he went to leave the handbrake would not release so he asked the passengers to get off. What exactly happened after that we have to find out. The main thing is that there were no fatalities.”
