The Loyalist Volunteer Force is implacably opposed to the peace process which it believes is a sell-out of unionism. It has about 100 members in the North and has a strong presence in the Mid-Ulster area.It has also units in parts of Belfast, south Down, and Derry. Around 20 loyalist prisoners in the Maze pledge allegiance to the group.Although considerably smaller than the UVF and the UDA, until Billy Wright's death security sources believed that it had the ability to destabilise a delicate security situation. It was formed last year as a breakaway group from the UVF. It is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of around half a dozen Catholics in the North since then. It has planted a bomb in Dundalk but that failed to explode. It has threatened to launch a bombing campaign in the Republic if Articles Two and Three are not removed from the Constitution. In an interview with The Irish Times earlier this year, an LVF spokesman said:"Maybe if bombs had been going off in Dublin, Cork and Wexford, the Anglo-Irish Agreement might not be in place and he involvement of the Irish Republic in this country might not be so great."
