A Rwandan doctor has been arrested in Uganda and brought to a UN tribunal on charges of involvement in Rwanda's 1994 genocide in which 800,000 people were killed.
Mr Juvenal Rugambarara faces nine charges including genocide and crimes against humanity during the massacres in which ethnic Hutu extremists slaughtered minority Tutsis and Hutu moderates.
"He was arrested by Ugandan authorities on Monday in Ugandaand he was transferred to Arusha (Tanzania) yesterday," saida spokesman for the International CriminalTribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, said by telephone.
He said Ugandan authorities were acting on an arrestwarrant issued against Mr Rugambarara in July 2000. His arrest brings to 56 the number of people in the ICTR's custody.
Mr Rugambarara is due to make his initial appearance in theTanzania-based tribunal on August 15th. If convicted, he faces a maximum term of life imprisonment.
