Mark Ryan was crowned the new West of Ireland Champion after defeating Alan Dowling 3 and 1 in at a benign Rosses Point this afternoon.

Ryan, a former Irish Youths winner, collected the first major championship of the amateur season in Ireland and with it his first senior title.

The Grange golfer didn't have it all his own way in the final as Dowling, from Hermitage, made it a tough contest in ideal conditions over the Sligo links.

The route to the final was confirmed in the morning semi-finals were, Ryan secured a narrow one-hole win over Brian McElhinney from North West while Dowling also claimed a one-hole victory over Dunmurray's Darren Crowe.
