Saddam Hussein has been nominated for another term by the country's top decision-making body.
A referendum on Saddam's second term will be held in October, although no exact date has been given. His seven-year presidential term expires in October.
In an October 1995 referendum, Iraqis endorsed Saddam as president for a seven-year term.
The Iraqi National Assembly will convene in an emergency session to endorse the nomination.

The Revolutionary Command Council said its members "have asserted that the leadership of President Saddam Hussein . . . has been a strong guarantee for protecting Iraq's independence and continuing on the march to development despite the imperialist and Zionists' plots and the unjust embargo imposed on our people".
