Southampton today warned Liverpool off over their £7 million sterling-rated left-back Wayne Bridge.

Southampton today warned Liverpool off over their £7 million sterling-rated left-back Wayne Bridge.

The England Under-21 international is believed to be attracting interest from the Merseyside giants after a string of excellent displays for the Saints.

He was inspirational in Saturday's 1-0 victory of Charlton at the St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe said: "There are no plans for him to be playing anywhere other than at St Mary's. He's a local lad and was outstanding on Saturday.

"I would ask our supporters to please disregard any stories you read, or rumours you hear, about Wayne going to Liverpool. He has just signed a contract extension and is not for sale".

Bridge was an ever-present in the Southampton defence last season and during Saturday's victory he created several openings with his lightning-quick runs down the left flank.

Lowe is aware such performances will spark interest from other clubs but said: "He is a Saints' player and will remain so".
