Galway football boss Liam Sammon will not take up the option of a third year in charge of the county’s senior footballers after announcing his decision to players and the county board last night.
An outstanding player for the county, Sammon took over from Peter Ford towards the end of 2007. He led them to a Connacht title in 2008 before Kerry got the better of the Tribesmen in a pulsating All-Ireland quarter-final that was played in a deluge at Croke Park.
Galway lost to Mayo in this year’s Connacht decider, before Donegal ended their summer with a one-point victory at Markievicz Park last month.
