Samples from a foetus have been sent by the PSNI to gardaí as part of an investigation into how a 14-year-old girl living in Dublin miscarried at a hospital in the North.

Gardaí believe the girl became pregnant and was given a substance to ingest so that she would lose her baby. When she became ill she was driven to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry in an apparent bid to frustrate any investigation into the matter in the Republic.

Gardaí and the PSNI have been investigating the case since last March. A complaint has been made alleging that the girl, originally from Nigeria, became pregnant after being raped by her father.
