Men's defending champion Pete Sampras reached the second round of the men's singles at Wimbledon today, defeating Spaniard Francisco Clavet 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in 2hrs 2mins.
Sampras, bidding for a record eighth title, faces Britain's Barry Cowan in the next round.
Serena Williams coasted through her first round match in the women's singles by defeating Hungary's Rita Kuti Kis 6-1, 6-0.
The American number five seed became the first seeded player into the second round on the opening day of the championships.

Men's sixth seed Tim Henman is also through to the second round after a 6-1 6-1 6-1 victory over Russian qualifier Artem Derepasko.
