Racing: The cold snap in Britain shows no signs of abating and Sandown's Tolworth Hurdle card is the latest high-profile meeting to bite the dust after failing to beat the frost.

Officials had covered the entire track to guard against the threat of frost but temperatures were as low as minus six at the time of the first inspection at 8am.

Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper called a second check for 10am but with very little improvement in temperatures, he was left with little option but to call off the card.

"Parts of the track that were OK at 6am have actually frozen this morning and we are still minus four as we speak," said Cooper.

"In the shade on the hill is really frozen so in the end, it actually became a relatively easy call for us as we know this doesn't thaw."

National Hunt enthusiasts will have another Saturday of disappointment after Wincanton's meeting was also called off without the need for their scheduled 8.30am inspection.

Ayr's meeting was abandoned earlier in the week.

Officials at Plumpton are optimistic ahead of Sunday's jumps fixture, but have still decided to stage a precautionary inspection at 8am.
