Waiting for Savage Garden to appear at The Point on Friday night, the teenage girls clutched glossy programmes and posters of the good-looking duo Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones.
Savage Garden hopped and skipped on stage to an eruption of ear-piercing screams from the 6,000-strong crowd. The collective shrieks that shook The Point intensified every time singer Darren wiggled his hips. He and instrumentalist Daniel then had an intimate moment around a spotlit grand piano, with a chorus of Imagine slipped in as a tribute to John Lennon's anniversary.
Savage Garden left the stage only to reappear with Darren wearing a shiny gold suit and porn-star shades. Here the show took a raunchier turn, with Darren gyrating between his two sexy backing singers. The crowd weren't sure whether to be embarrassed or to scream for more. The band once again left the stage, but they duly returned to perform the finale, their hit single Affirmation. The crescendo came less from Savage Garden themselves but from the frenzy they had created as the crowd reached hormone pulsing, emotionally charged bursting point.
