RTÉ is likely to show a deficit of €17 million for last year after originally facing the prospect of a shortfall of €68 million at the start of 2009 .
The figure is likely to be revealed in RTÉ’s annual report, to be published in the next month.
RTÉ senior communications manager Rory Coveney said the result was a “considerable achievement, albeit a painful one” given the challenge faced by the organisation at the start of 2009.
By law RTÉ cannot plan for a deficit but it can record one.

Mr Coveney said the cost-cutting measures were reflected in expenses for eight of the broadcaster’s most senior managers for last year.
They spent €23,386 last year down from €66,264 in 2008 and €65,526 in 2007.
