A Government scheme has pledged €200,000 funding to local community groups who encourage "positive public debate" about the European Union.

European Affairs Minister Noel Treacy today invited applications for the Communicating Europe Initiative which urges greater awareness of the EU.

"The Government aims to foster greater interest and debate in the EU and I am happy that we are able to support and encourage these initiatives in this way," he said.

Funding is available for projects aimed at raising wider public awareness about the European Union and at explaining how the EU affects the lives of citizens in a real and tangible way.

Particular emphasis will be placed on improving the quality and accessibility of public information on EU issues.

Since 1995 the Department of Foreign Affairs has provided funding to a wide range of groups including the European Youth Parliament, the Irish Countrywomen's Association, the National Agency for Adult Literacy as well other projects in schools, colleges, and universities.

"Encouraging positive public debate on the EU is particularly important as Europe now reflects on the way forward," Mr Treacy added.
