The Iraqi student who was suspended for five school days after having her photograph taken with the President, Mrs McAleese, is to be allowed back to school three days early.

Zainab Kadhum (17), a Leaving Certificate student at Ballinteer Community School asked Mrs McAleese to pose for the photo during a visit by the President to the school on Wednesday.

However, the student was suspended the following day for disobeying a direct instruction by a senior member of staff not to make such a request.

Following a report in The Irish Times, Zainab said she was contacted yesterday by the school and told she could return to class on Monday morning.

"I didn't want to come back to the school before they rang, but because I can go back on Monday I will," she said.

She said the school had given "no indication at all" as to why the suspension was lifted early.

The Irish Times was unable to contact anybody at the school for a comment.

Zainab was specifically instructed before the visit by Mr Danny Cussen, the school's vice principal, not to ask Mrs McAleese to pose for a photo.
