Legal proceedings against the Northern Secretary, Dr John Reid, and the PSNI arising from the ongoing protest at a north Belfast Catholic primary school have begun in Belfast High Court.

The mother of a child attending Holy Cross girls' school yesterday instructed solicitors to begin proceedings, claiming the police had not given adequate protection to her daughter.

In an affidavit, the parent who did not want to be named for security reasons, said the police had failed to identify, arrest or prosecute protesters who broke the law in full public view.

Meanwhile, on the last day of his visit to the North, Archbishop Desmond Tutu has met both sides in the dispute.
