Children were today having their say on the future of school life at a special meeting with Minister for Education Minster Ms Hanafin.

Pupils aged between nine and 13 were invited to meet the Minister as part of the 'Your Education System' (YES) process of public consultation on education. Around 35 children were selected from among those who took part in Dáil na bPaisti, held in 2004.

Ms Hanafin said it was hoped the children would give their views on what could be improved in the country's schools.

"The session will give children an opportunity to add their voices to those of their parents, teachers and older siblings which have been heard throughout the YES process," she said.

"I look forward to hearing their views on what they think is good about Irish education and what they would like to change.

The Minister said as was the case at other sessions held under the YES process, participants will be asked to discuss their experience and views of education in Ireland and to offer suggestions for the future.

"Listening to the views of everyone involved in, and affected by, our education system gives the YES process a unique and representative perspective on our education system, in terms of where we are now and where we should go from here."

A series of workshops will focus on school rules and codes of behaviour; teaching and learning methods; the voice of students and early school leaving.
