Minister for Education Mary Hanafin yesterday launched a new Irish-language guide to the European Union for pupils in primary schools.

Do Phas chun na hEorpa is described as a "fun and accessible" guide to understanding what being an EU citizen means. It was produced by the European Commission Representation in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister said: "I believe that this 'passport' booklet represents an excellent learning resource for teachers and pupils. It also provides the foundation to help primary school pupils begin to take an interest in European affairs."

Martin Territt, director of the European Commission Representation in Ireland, said: "We hope that this guide will be useful, in particular for teachers in the 260 gaelscoileanna and scoileanna Gaeltacht around the country, not only in geography and history classes, but also in that part of the curriculum that deals with developing citizenship and the wider world."
