Second- and third-level students involved in two science writing competitions organised by the Royal Irish Academy and The Irish Times must submit their entries within the next fortnight.

The separate chemistry and biochemistry competitions challenge entrants to write a 2,000-word newspaper article about science using ordinary language and without complicated jargon. The article may focus on international developments but should also include reference to related research in Ireland.

The chemistry competition has a prize fund of £1,550 sponsored by AGB Scientific Ltd and is open to second and third-level students who will be judged separately in their respective categories. The deadline for entries is January 21st.

The biochemistry competition has prizes worth £1,100 sponsored by Yamanouchi Ireland Co Ltd and is open to third-level students. The deadline is January 17th.
