Drivers in Northern Ireland are ignoring speed limits and warnings about drink driving and are contributing to the high levels of death on the roads, it was claimed today.

Scores of motorists were prosecuted for drink/drug driving, careless driving and speeding as part of the Police Service of Northern Ireland's road safety campaign, Operation Viper.

The figures released by the PSNI showed that in Urban Region alone 30 people were prosecuted for careless driving; 30 were prosecuted for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; 98 motorists received endorseable fixed penalty notices for speeding; 68 people were fined for not wearing a seat belt; and 19 were caught driving without insurance.

In addition, more than 200 people were stopped and warned by the police for having defective vehicles, careless driving, and driving with excess speed.
