Scotland coach Ian McGeechan has cut lock Scott Murray and utility back Brendan Laney from his squad for the Six Nations match against Wales at Murrayfielda week on Saturday.

Murray has always been considered a world-class second row, but a recent loss of form has contributed to Scotland's poor showing in the line-out in their two Six Nations matches this season.

"Scott had an indifferent game against France," said McGeechan, who has promoted Nathan Hines from the A team to replace Murray.

Laney, who started at flyhalf in the 38-3 defeat to France in Paris, owes his absence to the slight muscle injury that has prevented him from assuming the place-kicking duties.

"I think the leg injury has been hampering his performance," said McGeechan.

James McLaren is recalled in place of Laney, the France-based centre having merited his promotion after two impressive performances for Scotland A.

The other change to the squad is the inclusion of the Saracens hooker Rob Russell for Steve Scott of The Borders.

Scotland lost their first Six Nations match 36-6 to Ireland at Murrayfield.
